The Table

 Founded in 2023

An authentic community comprised of imperfect people, who in vulnerable and safe relationships, ask, doubt, question, and wrestle with what it means to be a lover of Jesus and Others.
For the last 2000 years, the church universal has followed the following pattern:
BEHAVE ➡ BELIEVE ➡ BELONG
Jesus thought and lived the exact opposite:
BELONG ➡ BELIEVE ➡ BEHAVE

We believe that there are very few hills to die on: in fact, Jesus (what He said and more importantly what He did) is the true hill upon which we “die.”  Yes, we have other beliefs but they all point to Jesus.

Our Beliefs

We believe in all the following BUT we also
believe that you do not have to agree with these to Belong.

● WE BELIEVE…in God the Father, the maker of heaven and earth
● WE BELIEVE…in Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God
○ That He was fully man and fully God
○ That He was born of the virgin Mary
○ That He lived a sinless life
○ That He was crucified under Pontius Pilate
○ That He died for the salvation of all
○ That He rose from the dead after 3 days
○ That He is seated at the right hand of God
○ That He is ever interceding on our behalf
○ That He unconditionally and recklessly loves YOU
● WE BELIEVE…in the Holy Spirit
○ That He works in and through us
○ That He is still alive and active in our world today
○ That He will guide us into all truth
○ That He lives inside us
○ That it is the Holy Spirit’s job, NOT OURS, to guide and correct
● WE BELIEVE…in the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, & Holy Spirit)
● WE BELIEVE…in the church universal
○ We Believe that the church has gotten a lot of things wrong over the
last 2000 years, but that it is still the bride of Christ, and that when
done correctly, it is still the best way to have an authentic, loving
community.
● WE BELIEVE…in the Bible
○ That it is God-breathed
○ That it was inspired by the Holy Spirit
○ That it still is inspired by the Holy Spirit
○ That it is a complicated book which allows for much debate
● WE BELIEVE…that one day we will dwell with the Holy Trinity in a new
heaven and a new earth.
● WE BELIEVE…that before original sin (Genesis 3) there was God’s
original goodness (Genesis 1&2)
● WE BELIEVE…that God is love and to become more like Jesus will
always call us to be more loving
● WE BELIEVE…that we might be wrong about certain things and that grace
will cover us both when we are accurate and when we are mistaken
● WE BELIEVE…that YOU BELONG HERE!!!

Our Behaviors

We believe that our behavior should marked by the following. (We will not be perfect in this but always looking to be more and more like Jesus):
● We will begin with love
● We will be peacemakers
● We will prize authenticity over certainty
● We will be honest
● We will both give grace and receive grace
● Both with ourselves and others
● We will seek unity, not uniformity
● We will behave as if what Jesus said and did is central to our lives
● We will be safe
● We will create and maintain a safe place to wrestle, doubt, & question
● We will nourish the fruit of the spirit in our lives (Galatians 5: 22-23)
● We will be vulnerable, believing that vulnerability breeds vulnerability
● We will end with love

David Abbott

David Abbott is the lead pastor at Trinity UMC in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is NOT a New York Times bestselling author but his mom thinks he writes pretty well. Time magazine has NOT recognized him as one of the most influential people in Christianity today, but his wife, Jessica, thinks he has got potential.

He is a “professional lover of God and people.” A fellow pilgrim on this “narrow road,” David is learning what it means to “unlearn” church and “re-learn” Jesus when they are not compatible. Unfortunately, too often, they are not.

“Join me, it’s gonna be fun!”
Born in 1978, David is a spiritual mutt. As a child, he was raised in a non-denominational, Pentecostal church in Central Florida. As a high schooler, his dad said “let’s go to the Southern Baptist church in town.”  (Thanks Pops). Upon moving to Indiana in 2000, he started attending an Assembly of God church in Fort Wayne. Then he and his wife found a non-denominational church in the town next door. (Hang on, there’s more).  They attended for 15 years until they felt called to attend an all-black Baptist church in the heart of Fort Wayne. After attending Lifeway Bible Fellowship for four years, David was hired at Trinity UMC in the heart of Fort Wayne. After one year, he became Lead Pastor, where he has served the last four years.
David received his undergraduate degree from West Coast Bible College. He
then completed his graduate degrees (an MBA & Masters of Ministry) from
Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
He has also attended Catholic mass, Greek Orthodox, and Russian Orthodox churches as well as learned from Lutherans, Presybterians, Catholic, and Protestant teachers and preachers.
(Ok, so you are right, he is a spiritual mutt!)
Instead of being a negative, David believes that it has been the best thing that has happened during his faith journey. “I have been required to learn what I believe Jesus and the scriptures say. I could not rely on the interpretation of one preacher or one church.”
